Use 48 pictures to teach 12 poetic forms and inspire your students to write over 500 possible poem combinations. Each poetic form includes a definition and original sample poem. Choose which form and which picture you want your students to use, or let the Poetry Starter randomly choose for you. We've included the following forms: acrostic, cinquain, concrete, diamante, free verse, haiku, limerick, pantoum, sestina, sonnet, tanka, and villanelle. We've even included a form we've made up -- see if your students can find it!

What a great thing. My class LOVES this. It's especially beneficial for the student who could never before think of something to write about. A real contribution to the educational world. THANKS!
Pros -
A great prompt.
Cons -
I wish that every photo came with an example.

Wow! My class loves this. They are excited to see what crazy picture they will write about. They are also amazed about how many poems can be written about "The Green Door."
Pros -
It motivates students to write poetry about everyday objects. As a teacher it is wonderful to read so many diverse poems about one picture.

The random form, random image ion is a good way to encourage quick, yet critical thinking. The images were interesting, and the examples of the forms of the poems were clear. However, the music in the background combined with the animated leaves flying across the screen made it distracting to focus on reading the complex definitions.
A great thing

This is the very best tool I have ever seen for teaching poetry. Every year I have always been sad to see the boys in my class roll their eyes when we wrote poetry in class. Not now
Pros -
I really like the samples shown. Whod have thought that a green door could be so useful. Whoever Jason is, hes a genius
Cons -
I loved it all... even the new and funny form of poetry included.

Although I have always enjoyed teaching HS literature, I must admit that I have always found poetry something difficult to teach. Perhaps this is related to when I was a kid as my teacher exposed our class to harsh critiques of our work and I have never wanted to be guilty of that. Anyway, I LOVE this... and I find it to be the best of any of the poetry starters I have tried in the past 15 years.
Pros -
I liked how I could use it with or without the music playing by simply using the toggle to turn off the sound. I also like how the same green door is used to demonstrate all of the forms. This is the PERFECT example to show the kids that anything can generate their ideas. This leads to some real critical thinking also, and that is crucual.
Cons -
I presumed that it might not be good as it was priced rather cheap. On the contrary, I found it to be a huge value. this is something all teachers appreciate in the budgetcut world we are in.
